Choosing a Domain Name for Your Business

A strong domain is easy to remember, defensible as a brand and simple to use in email, marketing and customer support.

Make it easy to communicate

Choose a name that customers can hear once and type correctly. Avoid unnecessary hyphens, confusing abbreviations and spellings that require repeated explanation. Test the name verbally with people who do not already know the business.

Match the market

A country-code domain can reinforce a local presence, while a familiar generic extension can support regional or international growth. Many organisations protect more than one relevant extension and redirect secondary names to the primary website.

Check brand and email implications

Search for similar trading names and obvious trademark conflicts before committing. Consider how the domain looks in addresses such as sales@, accounts@ and support@. A short, credible email address is often as important as the website URL.

Plan ownership and renewal

Register the domain in the organisation's name with current contact information. Use strong account security, record the registrar, enable renewal reminders and restrict who may change nameservers or transfer the domain.

Connect services carefully

DNS changes affect websites, email and verification services. Before replacing nameservers or mail records, capture the existing zone and identify every active record. Viewertech can assist with domain selection, registration and a controlled DNS plan.
