Why Namibian SMEs Need a Practical IT Continuity Plan

A useful continuity plan identifies critical systems, assigns recovery responsibilities and proves that backups can actually be restored.

Start with business impact

List the systems that support sales, finance, customer communication and service delivery. Record how long the organisation can operate without each one, what data would be lost and which people depend on it. This turns a broad continuity concern into a prioritised recovery plan.

Document dependencies

A website may depend on DNS, hosting, email, certificates, databases and third-party services. An accounting platform may also depend on internet access, identity services and backups. Map these relationships so a team does not recover one component while overlooking another essential dependency.

Assign ownership

Every recovery action needs a named owner and an alternate. Include supplier contacts, escalation paths, secure access procedures and the authority required to approve emergency work. Keep a protected offline copy because the normal document system may be unavailable during an incident.

Test recovery, not only backup

A successful backup notification does not prove that files, databases or virtual servers can be restored. Schedule controlled restore tests, record the time taken and correct gaps in instructions. Repeat the test after major infrastructure or application changes.

Keep the plan proportionate

A smaller organisation does not need a complicated programme. A concise inventory, recovery order, contact list, tested backups and clear communication procedure provide a strong starting point. Viewertech can help assess the environment and turn these essentials into an achievable continuity roadmap.
