Backups Are Not a Recovery Plan Until You Test Them

Restore testing reveals missing data, broken credentials and unrealistic recovery times before a real incident does.

Define what must be recoverable

Inventory files, databases, virtual machines, mail, cloud applications and configuration. Identify the acceptable data-loss window and recovery time for each service instead of applying one generic backup schedule.

Protect the backup system

Use separate credentials, limit administrative access and keep at least one protected or off-site copy. A backup that shares the same compromise path as production can be encrypted, deleted or altered during an incident.

Run representative restores

Restore a sample file, a database and a complete service where appropriate. Verify data integrity and application behaviour, not only whether the restore command finishes. Record every manual dependency discovered during the exercise.

Measure the real recovery time

The recovery objective includes locating instructions, obtaining access, restoring data, updating DNS or routing and validating the service with users. Compare the measured result with the business requirement and close the gap.

Maintain evidence

Keep test dates, scope, results, exceptions and corrective actions. This provides operational confidence and useful evidence for customers or governance reviews. Viewertech can help design a proportionate backup and recovery test for managed systems.
